Dragon Boat Festival Notice

Jun 18, 2026

The fifth day of the fifth lunar month is the Dragon Boat Festival. Among China's many traditional festivals, the Dragon Boat Festival holds a unique place. It carries both profound historical memories and a rich sense of daily life. For thousands of years, customs related to the Dragon Boat Festival have been passed down through generations, forming an important part of Chinese people's seasonal life.

From natural seasons to cultural commemorations

The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to ancient times. Ancient people observed celestial phenomena and discovered that during the Dragon Boat Festival in midsummer, the seven constellations of the Azure Dragon rise to the center of the south, so they held dragon totem worship ceremonies at this time.

Later, with the development of history, the Dragon Boat Festival was endowed with more cultural connotations. The most widely known is the commemoration of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. He drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, and later generations threw rice wrapped in bamboo leaves into the river to prevent fish and shrimp from harming his body. Besides Qu Yuan, some regions also commemorate figures like Wu Zixu and Cao E. The inclusion of these historical figures elevates the Dragon Boat Festival beyond a simple seasonal festival, imbuing it with the core spirit of loyalty, patriotism, and filial piety of the Chinese nation.

The Sentiments With in Zongzi

When talking about the Dragon Boat Festival, one cannot ignore zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). Originally, zongzi were offerings to ancestors and deities, but later they gradually became a seasonal food for the Dragon Boat Festival. Glutinous rice is wrapped in bamboo leaves or reed leaves and then tied with cotton thread, which not only makes it easy to preserve and carry, but also allows the fragrance of the plants to permeate the rice grains during the steaming process.

China is a vast country with abundant resources, resulting in diverse ways of making zongzi (sticky rice dumplings). In the north, where millet is plentiful, zongzi are often filled with red dates and red bean paste, giving them a sweet taste. In the south, where rice is abundant, zongzi are typically filled with pork, egg yolk, and chestnuts, resulting in a savory flavor. Regardless of the variations in taste, the process of the family sitting together folding the bamboo leaves, filling them with glutinous rice, and tying them with cotton thread is itself an important moment for family bonding and the passing down of family traditions. Those small zongzi encapsulate the joy of the harvest and the deep connection between family members.

The spirit of dragon boat racing, working together in the same boat

Dragon boat racing is the most representative group activity of the Dragon Boat Festival. In southern regions with well-developed water systems, dragon boat races are often held around the time of the festival. Accompanied by the rapid drumbeats, dozens of paddlers move in unison, propelling the dragon boats forward swiftly across the water.

This sport is not only a test of physical strength and teamwork, but also embodies the collective spirit of working together and striving for excellence. In traditional agricultural societies, dragon boat racing also expressed people's simple wishes for favorable weather and abundant harvests. The shouts and drumbeats on the river are a direct manifestation of the vitality of the people.

The wisdom of epidemic prevention in accordance with the times

Beyond commemoration and competition, the Dragon Boat Festival also embodies the ancient wisdom of epidemic prevention in accordance with the seasons. In the fifth month of the lunar calendar, the weather gradually becomes hot, mosquitoes, snakes, and scorpions become active, and diseases are prone to occur.

To ward off illness and evil spirits, many customs related to hygiene and health developed among the people. People hung mugwort and calamus on their doorframes, using their volatile fragrance to repel mosquitoes; they gave children sachets filled with Chinese herbs, tied with five-colored silk threads, to pray for peace and health; in some places, people would also boil herbs in water for bathing, called "Mulan Tang" (orchid bath). These customs are actually methods of disease prevention and health care summarized by the ancients through long-term practical experience, reflecting a philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature and living in accordance with the natural order.

Dragon Boat Festival culture belonging to the Chinese people

The Dragon Boat Festival has been passed down to this day. Although its forms may have been simplified with the development of the times, its inherent cultural spirit remains vibrant. It reminds us to remember history, cherish family ties, respect nature, and pray for peace and well-being.

At this time of year, when we peel open a zongzi (sticky rice dumpling) or smell the fragrance of mugwort at our door, we are actually having a silent dialogue with our ancestors from thousands of years ago, feeling the enduring warmth of our culture. The significance of traditional festivals lies precisely in the everyday, year-after-year routines of life, where they thrive and endure.
